After the Trump-Putin call and a full day of statements from Moscow, NATO, Germany, Ukraine, and the United States, the direction of this war is becoming harder to ignore: serious officials are now openly preparing for a conflict that could continue for months—and potentially years.
In this update, I break down Yuri Ushakov’s account of the Trump-Putin conversation, Dmitry Peskov’s insistence that Russia still intends to achieve the goals of its so-called “special military operation,” and Moscow’s apparent belief that winter pressure could weaken Ukraine. At the same time, Britain and Germany are moving additional air-defense support toward Ukraine as Russia intensifies attacks on critical infrastructure.
Germany’s Boris Pistorius warns that Russian air raids could increase as temperatures fall. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte calls on allies to dig deeper, while U.S. Undersecretary Elbridge Colby delivers one of the clearest statements of the day: the West must be prepared for a protracted conflict and for Ukraine’s requirements to continue for months and years ahead.

AfD leaders have said they would end support for Ukraine, restore relations with Moscow, and resume Russian gas purchases—making Germany’s political instability a major test for European cohesion.
I also look at Ukraine’s effort to build fuel storage in Hungary amid fears of winter strikes, plus the claimed 416 km/h Zorylet V5 interceptor drone. On the Russian side, I assess plans to expand carbon-fiber capacity that could support 28,000 additional Shahed-136-type airframes annually, alongside reported Dan-T missile production targets. I examine Vladimir Putin’s decree raising Russia’s authorized armed-forces strength to more than 2.44 million personnel, including 1.55 million active service members. The latest increase adds 49,860 total personnel and 47,860 servicemen—not the reported 300,000-man mobilization target, but potentially an incremental route toward it. I assess the possible manpower sources: coerced Russian citizenship and military registration in occupied Ukraine, reported additional North Korean deployments, and a 2027 Russian defense allocation of 17.1 trillion rubles.

Ukraine endured an extremely dangerous day of Russian attacks stretching from western regions to the front-line areas, with ballistic strikes hitting Odesa and parts of the city losing power. President Zelenskyy warned that Russia is preparing to intensify attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure as the country moves toward fall and winter.
In this update, I break down the scale of the attacks, including more than 500 Russian attack drones reported during the day, the suspension of rail service into Sumy, strikes on civilian and economic targets, and the growing pressure from sharply rising fuel prices. At the same time, Ukraine continued striking military bases and industrial targets supporting Russia’s war effort.
We also look at Vladimir Putin’s latest warnings about European troops in Ukraine, the response from Peskov and Lavrov, Zelenskyy’s warning that attacks on Ukraine’s energy system will receive a response, and the increasingly hostile rhetoric surrounding possible negotiations. Finally, we examine new reports that Russian forces are again actively using Starlink terminals for communications and drone operations.

Vladimir Putin used a bizarre killer-whale-and-polar-bear analogy while speaking to students—and then connected that “food chain” directly to Russia’s war against Ukraine. But Putin’s rhetoric is only one part of a much larger warning emerging from Russia and Eastern Europe.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says the next seven to eight months could be critical for Ukraine, Poland, and the entire region. He warns that Russia appears to be preparing for escalation and cites assessments that Moscow may seek to mobilize another 600,000 soldiers. At the same time, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says there are no grounds for improved relations with NATO or the European Union and accuses Europe of mobilizing its military potential against Russia.
We also examine the devastating explosion near Kyiv that killed 37 people. President Zelenskyy acknowledged that a major ammunition storage facility was located where it “definitely should not have been” and promised a full investigation. Finally, we look at Putin’s meeting with Alexander Lukashenko and a serious strategic problem facing Washington: reports that U.S. missile and air-defense inventories have been heavily depleted by transfers to the Middle East, potentially complicating American contingency planning in Europe and Asia.
