“For more than two decades, Raymond Ibrahim has been one of the most rigorous and intellectually consistent voices in the international debate on Christian persecution, Islamism, and the historical conflicts between Islam and the West.
His work is grounded in extensive study of primary sources — including classical Arabic texts, medieval chronicles, and modern jihadist documents. Combining scholarly depth with rare communicative clarity, he has made complex historical realities accessible to a broad audience.
Ibrahim insists on something fundamental: that religion matters. That sacred texts matter. That history matters. And that violence committed in the name of God does not become less real simply because it is uncomfortable.
He has systematically documented the ongoing and structural persecution of Christians in large parts of the Muslim world, and has placed contemporary conflicts within a broader historical framework in books such as Crucified Again, Sword and Scimitar, Defenders of the West, and most recently The Two Swords of Christ.
It is precisely this insistence on taking religious sources seriously that has made him controversial. On several occasions, attempts have been made to cancel his lectures under accusations of “Islamophobia” — including at the U.S. Army War College in 2019.

Muslim responses to this hadith typically go as follows:
1) al-Zutt were Jinn, not humans;
2) The hadith is referencing the "Night of the Jinn," when Muhammad reportedly preached the Koran to them;
3) Abdullah bin Mas'ud is on record saying that he was not with Muhammad on the Night of the Jinn: therefore, the hadith is weak (ضعيف) and likely fabricated.
As discussed in this video, however, the earliest sources all depict al-Zutt as humans, meaning the night in question had nothing to do with the Jinn, and therefore the testimony of Abdullah — a chief and trusted transmitter of hadith — remains valid (the one argument raised against this hadith, that Abdullah was not present during the Night of the Jinn, becomes a moot point).

In this episode of The Winston Marshall Show, I sit down with historian and Middle East scholar Raymond Ibrahim for a deep historical examination of the Crusades, the centuries long conflict between Islam and Christianity, and the moral framework of just war.
We challenge the modern narrative that portrays the Crusades as unprovoked Christian aggression, and instead trace the centuries of Islamic expansion that preceded them, from the conquest of the Levant and North Africa to the fall of Christian territories across the Mediterranean. Ibrahim lays out the theological, military, and political realities of the era, arguing that the Crusades were understood at the time as defensive wars within a Christian just war tradition.

THE 1,400-YEAR WAR: Raymond Ibrahim on the Real History of Islam
