3 Midterm Scandals—And It's Not Election Day Yet
Five days before the midterms, I examine three campaign controversies that could test voters’ tolerance for political dirty tricks. Minnesota prosecutors have charged James O’Keefe and Cam Higbie with unlawful voting and identity theft after they allegedly used registered voters’ names at polling places without casting ballots. In Alaska, reporting on efforts to recruit a second Dan Sullivan raises questions about ballot-name confusion and the possible Senate consequences. In Ohio, Vivek Ramaswamy’s ad featuring opponent Amy Acton’s estranged mother has drawn criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike.
I also set these races against a broader strategic backdrop: Trump’s approach to Putin and Zelensky, debate over sanctions pressure on Russia, unconfirmed suspected cyber incidents at U.S. military commissaries, tanker mine reports near Hormuz, and the reported $47 billion cost of the Iran war. My central point is simple: candidates who appear tone-deaf on inflation, trust, and basic fairness may pay a real electoral price.
