The U.S. Navy has finished clearing Iran's minefield out of the Strait of Hormuz — more than 100 objects located on the seabed over four months, and the international shipping lanes are open. But the multinational center that merchant captains actually steer by still rates the waterway SEVERE, and mine danger areas are still active. Here's what actually happened, and why the real version hits harder than the headline.
We break down the three-layer mine countermeasures architecture that did it: the MH-60S Seahawk carrying the AN/AES-1 Airborne Laser Mine Detection System, the 38-foot MCM Unmanned Surface Vehicle towing the AN/AQS-20C sonar and the Unmanned Influence Sweep System, and the undersea drones working the bottom.
