UKRAINE HAD A GREAT NIGHT!

I examine Ukraine’s calculated strikes on Russian war-supporting industry: the Azot chemical plant in Novomoskovsk, a major steel facility in Lipetsk, and—days earlier—the Energia plant in Yelets. Azot produces ammonia, nitric acid, ammonium nitrate, and other chemical inputs; nitric acid is vital to explosives production. Satellite imagery also indicated heavy damage at Energia production buildings associated with power sources for systems including Iskander, Kinzhal, Zircon, and Pantsir.

I also assess the other side of the exchange. Ukrainian defenses are improving against Russia’s jet-powered Garan drones, with F-16s, Mirage and MiG-29 aircraft, MANPADS, and new interceptors contributing to higher shootdown rates. But ballistic-missile defense remains the urgent vulnerability: Kyiv says Patriot missile deliveries and approvals have been delayed while Russia fires missiles at the capital region. Deep strikes can impose real industrial costs, but they do not remove the immediate need for air-defense ammunition.
