Zelensky Finally Defied Trump—Then We Learned Why
I examine why Volodymyr Zelensky publicly broke with President Trump after the Wall Street Journal reported that Kyiv received no usual U.S. ballistic-missile warning during a Russian strike. I also discuss the reported Starshield disruption, six ballistic missiles striking Kyiv, and Zelensky’s claim that Russia hit Ukrainian energy, oil, and gas facilities 76 times after an announced energy ceasefire. My central argument is strategic: pressure meant to produce peace must fall on Moscow, not on the state resisting invasion.
I then assess the administration’s indefinite Russia sanctions waiver, the proposed Russian diesel arrangement, and Marco Rubio’s stated 60-day economic review. I connect these decisions to Europe’s burden of sustaining Ukraine, the G7’s $260 million Chernobyl confinement repair plan, alleged attacks on Starlink facilities in Poland, Bulgaria, and Lithuania, and concerns over Russian influence operations in France. The question is whether unused sanctions leverage still deters Putin—or signals that escalation pays.
