President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued one of Ukraine’s most direct warnings yet about the growing danger inside Russian airspace: the “safe days for Russia’s skies are over.” Zelenskyy says Ukraine is not threatening civilian aviation, but warns that increasing Ukrainian drone and missile operations against Russian military targets and the war economy are making Russian airspace increasingly unsafe.
The warning comes alongside a broader escalation in rhetoric between Kyiv and Moscow. Zelenskyy said the United States asked Ukraine to refrain from strikes on Moscow and St. Petersburg from August 25–27, a request Ukraine complied with while Russian attacks continued. Kyrylo Budanov reinforced Zelenskyy’s warning, saying Ukraine will deliver a harsh and proportionate response and that international airlines, insurers, and partners should recognize the new reality in Russian airspace.

After the Trump-Putin call and a full day of statements from Moscow, NATO, Germany, Ukraine, and the United States, the direction of this war is becoming harder to ignore: serious officials are now openly preparing for a conflict that could continue for months—and potentially years.
In this update, I break down Yuri Ushakov’s account of the Trump-Putin conversation, Dmitry Peskov’s insistence that Russia still intends to achieve the goals of its so-called “special military operation,” and Moscow’s apparent belief that winter pressure could weaken Ukraine. At the same time, Britain and Germany are moving additional air-defense support toward Ukraine as Russia intensifies attacks on critical infrastructure.
Germany’s Boris Pistorius warns that Russian air raids could increase as temperatures fall. A Ukrainian journalist got the chance to ask President Donald Trump three direct questions while President Zelenskyy and senior U.S. officials were sitting in the room: What happens with the Lindsey Graham sanctions bill? Will Trump press China? And will the United States move forward on possible Patriot missile production in Ukraine?
Trump said the sanctions legislation is being studied, indicated China would likely come up in discussions, and said talks about Patriot production were continuing. The timing matters because Dmitry Peskov responded the following morning with Moscow’s own message on Ukraine, negotiations, and the possibility of future U.S.-Russia meetings.
In this update, I walk through those exchanges in sequence and examine how the answers from Washington were followed by the Kremlin’s public position. Peskov accused Ukraine and Europe of moving away from peace negotiations, said Putin and Trump remain open to another meeting if necessary, and repeated Moscow’s position that Zelenskyy could come to Moscow for talks.

I examine two election results that could sharpen the strategic pressure on Ukraine: AfD’s 38.3% result in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where Friedrich Merz’s CDU fell below the 5% parliamentary threshold, and United Russia’s new constitutional majority in the Duma. AfD leaders have said they would end support for Ukraine, restore relations with Moscow, and resume Russian gas purchases—making Germany’s political instability a major test for European cohesion.
I also look at Ukraine’s effort to build fuel storage in Hungary amid fears of winter strikes, plus the claimed 416 km/h Zorylet V5 interceptor drone. On the Russian side, I assess plans to expand carbon-fiber capacity that could support 28,000 additional Shahed-136-type airframes annually, alongside reported Dan-T missile production targets. The central question is whether Europe can sustain support for Ukraine while Russia further consolidates political power and military-industrial capacity.

I break down President Trump’s UN General Assembly remarks and his public meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in New York. Trump said Congress had provided him with new tariff authorities associated with Senator Lindsey Graham, but framed their use as conditional. When asked whether Ukraine could regain all occupied territory, he declined to define a settlement, saying only that the sides would make a deal.
I also examine the strategic tension in Trump’s response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and fuel infrastructure: he acknowledged a serious hit on Russia while warning about higher diesel prices. Zelensky pressed the urgency of ending the war before winter, while his discussions with Emmanuel Macron included additional SAMP/T systems, interceptor production, and the Freya missile-defense project. On September 25, I examine reports of a large Ukrainian long-range drone operation across Russia, including fires at Lukoil’s Perm oil refinery—some 1,500 kilometers from Ukraine—and strikes on the Iskra electronics plant in Ulyanovsk. Iskra is reportedly tied to semiconductor components for Kh-59 missiles, Pantsir air defenses, radar, and communications equipment. Reported targets also included the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, a synthetic-rubber facility in Voronezh, a logistics site in occupied Luhansk, and two radar stations in Rostov.
I compare this dispersed strike pattern with Russia’s overnight drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, including the deadly strike on a Kyiv residential high-rise and reported casualties in Kharkiv Oblast. I also assess airport disruptions, air-defense pressure, the earlier Kuibyshev refinery damage, and Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian logistics on the Zaporizhzhia front. The strategic issue is whether repeated, clustered drone raids can impose sustained costs on Russia’s oil, defense-industrial, and logistics networks.
