Today, the biggest news comes from Crimea.
Here, a Russian soldier screwed up by posting a selfie on social media, showing himself in secret place designated for the Russian military. What followed sent shockwaves through the Russian rear and obliterated on the most important Russian secret services base.
Recently, Ukrainian kamikaze drones struck a headquarters of the Russian Federal Security Service and an arms depot in Henichesk Hirka, triggering massive fires at both places. However, before striking, the Ukrainians had to go through an elaborate process to even make it to the targets.
To do so, Ukrainian military analysts are using open-source intelligence methods, which involve collecting, analyzing, and verifying publicly available information to investigate events and build situational awareness. Common sources include Russian social media posts, satellite imagery, videos, and photographs. Ukrainian planners use this material to geolocate Russian targets far behind enemy lines by matching visible clues in them with real-world geography. This process typically combines terrain analysis, architecture, infrastructure, and environmental features to determine a precise location and then plan a suitable operation to exploit these findings.
Using these methods, Ukrainian analysts constantly monitor social media, where Russian soldiers often expose their own positions by posting selfies and videos online while boasting about life at their bases. Even a single visible landmark or building is enough in many cases, as Russian intelligence units often choose to operate from luxury resorts, hotels, and seaside complexes, believing these locations offer not only comfort but also concealment. However, using civilian resort infrastructure as a military headquarters also makes it easier to detect and target. The facility in that case was a key Russian deployment and command post, used for storing and preparing missiles and strike drones. The Federal Security Service coordinated the strikes and distributed the weapons to their designated launch points.
After locating the enemy, Ukrainian forces started preparation for the main attack by destroying a Russian Pantsir air defense system, increasing the likelihood of mission success. After that, six Ukrainian long-range drones, operated in real time by remote pilots, attacked the complex on the Arabat Spit in a coordinated sequence. The first strikes focused on the main building, serving as the headquarters of the Russian intelligence unit. The following strikes targeted nearby structures where Russian forces were storing drones, ammunition, and missiles, triggering powerful secondary explosions across the area. To complete the operation, more Ukrainian drones struck the main building again, collapsing large sections of the structure and setting it completely ablaze. Following the series of impacts, a massive column of fire rose above the complex, while ammunition stored inside continued detonating for an extended period afterward.
In another recent example, a Russian soldier unintentionally exposed a military launch site by posting a photo of himself standing in front of pickup trucks carrying Shahed drones, one of the primary systems Russia uses to conduct long-range drone attacks against Ukraine. The image showed a drone mounted on a vehicle, which serves as a mobile launcher, that can quickly deploy and relocate after launching a drone.
Ukrainian analysts examined the image and were able to geolocate it to a specific section of an air base in Russian-controlled Crimea. Shortly after the image appeared on social media, Ukrainian operators subsequently targeted the installation with drones, resulting in multiple fires spreading across the airfield and surrounding infrastructure, as proved by Nasa fire-monitoring satellites. Belbek Air Base, located near Sevastopol, is a key hub for Russian military aviation in the region. It supports a range of operations, including fighter patrols and air defense missions, and is equipped with aircraft such as the Su twenty seven and Mig thirty one. In addition to its established aviation role, the incident also suggested that the airfield has been adapted for use as a launch site for Shahed-type drones.
Overall, one careless social media post was enough to expose a critical Russian military position in Crimea. Ukrainian analysts are always looking out for these mistakes to identify important Russian bases and drone launch sites, to target them before they can strike Ukraine. The incident highlights that information, digital mistakes, and open-source intelligence analysis are playing a key role in Ukraine’s defense...
I examine Ukraine’s reported October 9 strikes inside Russia, including a second Yandex data center hit in two nights. Yandex said several modules at its Kaluga facility were disabled, following a strike on a site in Ryazan the previous day. That is notable, but I caution against treating two attacks as proof of a sustained data-center campaign. Russia also claimed 505 interceptions against roughly 450 reported Ukrainian drones—a figure that plainly deserves skepticism and context.
I also assess the reported fire at the Radinsky Experimental Plant in Tver Oblast, which produces Desalin-M fuel components used for Kh-55 and Kh-101 cruise missiles, and the strike on Lukoil’s Ukhta refinery in Komi, more than 1,700 kilometers from Ukraine. These targets point to pressure on missile production, fuel logistics, and air defenses. Meanwhile, Russian strikes killed civilians in Zaporizhzhia, and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned that a failure of air defenses could make winter survival a grave concern.

In the skies above the frontline, the Ukrainian air force unleashed a devastating series of J-dam bombardments on Russian positions. After securing one of the largest J-dam resupply packages since the start of the war, the Ukrainian air forces stopped rationing them and started conducting constant strikes on the Russian lines.
Recently, the United States has approved a major three-hundred-seventy-three-million-dollar package that includes more than one thousand five hundred J-dam bombs for Ukraine. The package will be financed through a combination of Ukrainian funds and monetary contributions from European Nato countries. Particularly important is that this is the Extended Range variant that adds deployable wings that allow bombs to glide up to eighty kilometers after release, combining GPS and inertial navigation systems, enabling the bombs to accurately strike fixed targets in any weather conditions. This enables Ukrainian aircraft to attack Russian positions from much safer distances while remaining outside many Russian frontline air defense ranges.
With more bombs secured, Ukraine has increasingly stepped up its J-dam campaign on Russian command-and-control infrastructure and logistics facilities to break the backbone of Russian battlefield operations, including facilities near Huliaipole and the broader Zaporizhia Region. Additional strikes targeted railway bridges north of Siversk that were being used for logistics and troop deployments. Such attacks degrade Russia’s ability to coordinate operations while disrupting the movement of supplies, reinforcements, and ammunition to frontline units.
Ukrainian aircraft continued their campaign with operations against enemy drone operator posts. They repeatedly targeted a mining complex east of Rodynske, where Russian drone operators had been observed on multiple occasions. A Ukrainian Su-twenty-seven struck the site with J-dam extended-range bombs, followed by another precision strike that destroyed a building, housing operators of the elite Russian Rubicon unit. The fact that the same complex was attacked several days in a row suggests Ukraine deliberately ensured surviving operators could not resume operations.
Additional strikes hit Russian drone command posts near Huliaipole and Pidhirne, while another Mig-twenty-nine destroyed one such control point in Plavni together with personnel, equipment, and ammunition. These attacks are strategically important because they reduce Russian drone reconnaissance and strike activity simultaneously. Without drones, Russian assault groups lose their primary source of battlefield awareness, making attacks slower, less coordinated, and significantly more vulnerable to Ukrainian defenses.
After command centers and drone operators were neutralized, Ukrainian aircraft increasingly focused on Russian troop concentrations. A Su-twenty-seven struck an enemy concentration near Siversk with J-dam bombs, while other airstrikes targeted Russian assault troops concentrated in former substations, multi-story buildings, and mining facilities near Kostiantynivka, Pokrovsk, Rodynske, and Udachne. In many cases, these positions housed troops awaiting orders, reinforcements, or preparation for assaults. By eliminating such concentrations, Ukraine not only inflicts casualties but also disrupts future offensive operations before they begin.
The significance of the newly approved package with more than one thousand five hundred J-dam bombs is hard to underestimate, as it is the largest single precision-strike package Ukraine has received. Previously, Ukrainian commanders often had to conserve these weapons for only the highest-priority targets. A predictable replenishment pipeline now allows precision airstrikes to become routine battlefield tools rather than occasional opportunities.
Ukraine has already been using J-dam bombs since two thousand twenty three by integrating them onto Soviet-era Mig-twenty-nine and Su-twenty-seven fighter jets. Ukrainian engineers developed custom interfaces that allow these aircraft to carry and employ Western precision munitions despite being designed decades before such weapons existed. When using non-extended range variants of the J-dam, Ukrainian pilots typically fly at low altitude to avoid detection, then briefly climb before performing a lofted release. The bomb glides toward pre-programmed coordinates while the aircraft immediately turns away, minimizing exposure to Russian air defenses. However, with extended-range variants now on the way, Ukrainian jets can launch these bombs from up to eighty kilometers away, ensuring the safety of the craft and pilot by staying out of reach of the already few Russian air defenses that dare to come close to the frontline.

Today, the biggest development is coming from inside Russia itself.
Here, Russian partisans fighting on the side of Ukraine conducted a large-scale operation deep into enemy-held territory that paralyzed the Russian railway logistics.
The main Ukrainian intelligence Directorate or GUR, recently released footage of this truly historic covert operation. Russian citizens fighting for Ukraine in the Freedom of Russia Legion were sent to infiltrate all across Russian-controlled Ukraine in one unified operation. Speaking Russian and pretending to be citizens of the Russian proxy states in Donbas, they remained undetected as they moved toward their target, the most critical component of the Russian army’s entire logistics network: their railway lines.
Simultaneously setting explosive charges onto the fuel carts in the middle of the night, all the major Russian railway hubs were targeted. Ukrainians blew up trains in the major cities of Donbas and Luhansk, which form the capitals of Russia’s LPR and DPR puppet states. They set fire to locomotives and rail relay stations in Mariupol and Melitopol, where all of Russia’s logistics in the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions flow through. The undercover operatives even penetrated as deep as Rostov-on-Don, where the main headquarters of Russian high command overseeing the war in Ukraine is operating from. Nowhere was safe, as the footage shows scores of trains and crucial railway infrastructure exploding and going up in flames.
Russians themselves responded with outrage. They complain that too many Russians inside of the country are increasingly showing support and favoritism toward Ukraine. They say that these people are responsible for regular partisan attacks inside of Russia and the Russian-controlled territories in Ukraine. This is not surprising however, as the Ukrainian intelligence directorate is actively advertising to people in these territories and opponents of Putin’s regime to get in contact with them to become a part of the resistance movement, including training, intelligence gathering, and even direct sabotage attacks.
Because of this, recent partisan attacks have spread to railway logistics in cities as far as Kemerovo, Tyumen, and Yekaterinburg. Here, three locomotives in dual-use by the Russian armed forces were burned down, paralyzing Russian transport capacity across the most important transport lines connecting Siberia with Russia-proper across the Ural mountains. Most often however, sabotage occurs much closer to the frontlines in Ukraine, where all disruptions are felt immediately on the front. Partizans set fire to railway cabinets in Luhansk, which ground transport to a temporary halt long enough for follow-up strike drones to take full advantage of the stationary trains. Vehicles used by Russian soldiers in the rear are also common targets for lower-level sabotage by resistance members, preventing transport of supplies, ammunition, and reinforcements to the front. While the impact of a single vehicle may seem small, this results in one less vehicle that Ukrainians have to deal with on the front, one Russian sector that starts running low on supplies, and fewer potential infiltrators causing a headache for Ukrainian forces in the rear.
Overall, if every minor action adds up to a consequential effect, Ukrainians just unleashed a tidal wave of frontline impact. The coordinated operation executed by volunteers of the Freedom of Russia Legion not only destroyed over ten thousand tons of fuel supplies, but the carriers and locomotives that cart supplies around as well. As the railway continues to form the backbone of the Russian army’s logistics, the disruptions and delays that this destruction has caused are significant. With Russian officials seemingly unable to stem the wave of resistance fighters operating not only within the Ukrainian territories they control, but throughout mainland Russia as well, the pressure is building up, and continued resistance becomes a more accessible option with every operation that passes.
