During a Friday afternoon press briefing, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz disclosed that the 16-year-old gunman fired up to 15 rounds from a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun inside a single special-education classroom during Thursday's deadly assault at Silver Rail Elementary School. The suspect, publicly identified by authorities as former student Griffin J. John II, bypassed front-door security by jumping a perimeter fence and shooting his way through a side entrance. Law enforcement officials confirmed the weapon used was registered to his mother and revealed that 44 unfired rounds consisting of birdshot, buckshot, and slugs were recovered at the scene. While a definitive motive has yet to be established, Krantz detailed the heroic actions of an unnamed school teacher who initially slowed the attack by physically tackling the suspect before armed bystander Kaylub Giamanco.

Today, there are important updates from the Sumy direction.
Here, Russia desperately needed an innovative tactic to have a chance of breaking through the Ukrainian defenses. However, as the Russian assault units made the same mistake six times in a row, the consequences of their venture quickly became devastating.
Russia is becoming increasingly desperate because its conventional assaults in the area are failing, leaving its forces unable to break into the forest belt or suppress Ukrainian drone operators. The terrain has turned this sector into a deadly trap, as Ukrainians control the forest while Russian assault groups must cross open fields completely exposed to drone and artillery fire. Ukrainian forces maintain full fire control over the approaches, striking the enemy long before they reach the tree line. These repeated frontal assaults caused severe manpower losses and stalled advances entirely, forcing Russian commanders to abandon predictable attacks and search for a concealed infiltration route instead.
The plan was to replicate the success of the Russian infiltration into Sudzha during the Ukrainian incursion, when Russian soldiers used a pipeline as cover to bypass Ukrainian positions. Now, the Russian forces attempted to use the Urengoy–Pomary–Uzhgorod gas pipeline to surprise the Ukrainians again. Russian assault groups advanced seventeen kilometers through the pipeline system, entering via a collector shaft on Russian territory. Along the route, they established two rest points positioned approximately five kilometers apart, allowing troops to remain inside the pipeline for up to seven days. However, movement inside the pipeline is uncomfortable as it is only one hundred and forty centimeters in height, forcing Russians to crouch. Several openings were also prepared on the Ukrainian side. These serve as decoys to divert attention, while others were designated exit points for the assault teams.
The first assault began at dawn south of Yablunivka, where Russian infantry launched a coordinated attack, with some troops emerging from a gas pipeline while others advanced through nearby tree lines. Ukrainian drone operators quickly detected the movement and directed FPV drone strikes against the assault groups before they could disperse or take cover in forested areas. As a result of the Ukrainian crossfire with drones, the Russian forces were eliminated.
Despite the failure of the initial assault, Russian forces committed an even larger contingent to the operation. By monitoring all known and suspected exit points around the clock, Ukrainian soldiers could immediately direct FPV drones and artillery onto the new assault wave as soon as fifteen Russian soldiers emerged from the pipeline. The attack was quickly contained, while drone operators later eliminated the remaining infantry with grenade drops as they had nowhere to hide. During this engagement, forty-four Russian troops were killed in just thirty minutes, stopping the assault entirely.
In another attempt north of Nova Sich, six Russian soldiers advanced through the gas pipeline. Despite reducing the size of the infiltration unit to avoid detection, Ukrainian drones with thermal cameras spotted them even before they fully approached the defensive line. As additional Russian assault troops attempted to spread out after exiting the pipeline, Ukrainian artillery targeted them directly in the field, while the remaining soldiers were later neutralized by strikes from Vampire heavy drones.
Geolocated footage from a separate assault showed Russian troops emerging from the same pipeline southwest of the village of Yablunivka. This time, Russian forces also launched a diversionary attack using motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles from Russian-held territory. The diversion failed to distract Ukrainian defenders because drone surveillance was already expecting pipeline exits and refused to redirect resources, killing at least thirty-five Russian soldiers, wounding seventeen others, and destroying three motorcycles and four ATV.
During their next assault, twenty-nine Russian troops irrationally attempted the same tactic again. This time, the Ukrainian soldiers dispatched their quadcopter drones to eliminate the entire group before it could even reach the frontline. In total, Russian forces attempted variations of the same pipeline infiltration tactic five times over the course of a single month, with each assault launched less than a week after the previous one. By that stage, the element of surprise had completely disappeared as Ukrainians no longer needed to patrol large areas because they only had to monitor known pipeline exits.

The ICE officer who shot a Venezuelan man in North Austin on Sunday was not wearing a bodycam, according to reports. Here, Ukraine has just started to demolish Russia’s Baltic Fleet with long-range drone strikes. The targets of the devastating blow have become the warships responsible for protecting Russian tanker routes.
Recent footage shows a large-scale Ukrainian drone strike reaching beyond Saint Petersburg, more than one thousand and one hundred kilometers from the Ukrainian border. During it, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces hit a Russian corvette twice while it was undergoing repairs in a dry dock at Kronstadt. The attack is especially notable because the vessel is new and equipped with the latest anti-ship, anti-submarine, and air-defense systems. These capabilities allowed it to serve as an armed escort vessel for shadow fleet tankers transiting through the Baltic Sea. The timing of the strike was also embarrassing for Russia, as Saint Petersburg was hosting an economic forum where Vladimir Putin was expected to highlight the strength and stability of the Russian economy.
The reason why Ukrainian drone operators targeted the vessel is exactly its role in escorting tankers belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet through international waters, including the English Channel. By degrading the combat capabilities of the Baltic Fleet, Ukraine can deprive Russian cargo vessels of receiving naval escorts, a key element of Russia’s plan to deter sanction enforcement by European countries. With the limited number of ships Russia has to fulfill this role, each successful strike cripples Russian abilities to do so further. At the same time, the strike also broadens opportunities for international pressure on Russia as the effectiveness of its navy declines, so European countries can intercept the undefended Russian oil tankers without any risk of escalation. For example, French authorities capitalized on the lack of armed escorts and boarded a tanker linked to the shadow fleet and detained its captain.
The significance of the strike is that it affects the protection of tankers starting from Russia’s Baltic ports, which have become the primary export points for Russian oil. Despite also being targeted by the Ukrainians, they are still regarded as slightly more secure than those in the Black Sea, which is under Ukrainian fire control with naval and long-range drones. Now, Russia exports approximately fifty percent of its seaborne crude oil from its Baltic Sea ports, which makes it heavily reliant on this route. However, the oil tankers going through here need to be escorted by warships to dissuade interception at sea by Ukraine’s European allies, which has been happening increasingly often. Notably, the Russian naval escorts create an effective political deterrent against boardings at sea, proven by the track record of unhindered passage of Russian tankers through European waters.
Since the end of March, approximately three hundred vessels from Russia's shadow fleet have transited through British waters, most of them via the English Channel. Despite this, not a single vessel was stopped or inspected, leading Russian commentators to boast that European countries are unwilling to intervene, and the presence of even a single Russian escort warship was enough to deter them. However, the Russian Baltic Fleet losses will change this balance of power in Europe’s and Ukraine’s favor because Russia will increasingly be unable to project power.
By targeting Russian warships and reducing their number, Ukraine is indirectly making it easier for Nato countries to take action against vessels associated with Russia's shadow fleet. Here, Ukraine is using the same strategy as it did in the Black Sea, where approximately thirty percent of Russia’s fleet has been destroyed since two thousand and twenty-two. Notably, this follows the same pattern as it is not the first successful strike against Baltic Fleet assets. At Primorsk Port, Ukrainian forces damaged a guided-missile corvette and a patrol boat. In another attack, Ukrainian drones struck a patrol icebreaker, which is a dual-purpose vessel used by the FSB Border Service that combines military capabilities with icebreaking functions.
Overall, these strikes contribute to a steady erosion of Russia's naval capabilities in the Baltic region. As a result, Russia has an increasingly limited pool of warships that can be assigned to escort and protect vessels linked to its shadow fleet, enabling European countries to intercept sanctioned Russian vessels. The ultimate target is not the ships themselves, but Russia's ability to protect oil exports and generate revenue for the war effort.
