This was an expected, but serious response from Iran

In response to Iran firing missiles at two US warships in the Middle East, the US military just destroyed three Iranian oil tankers. This is actually a pretty big escalation in a few ways. First off, the launching missiles at our aircraft carrier is significant and not something we’ve seen in a while but then the US response was serious, actually sinking commercial vessels in this key waterway.

That said, we’re still at a bit of an impasse where neither Iran nor the US seem willing to give an inch as the pressure mounts in different ways.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Russia is closing German cultural centers on its territory as a retaliatory response after Germany blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport on August 4. The explosives-laden drone was found near a Ukrainian plane at the airport and was later defused. This situation was later condemned by European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who called it "an attempted Russian attack." This was a bigger reaction from Iran than expected

Looks like we’re back to war. This appears to be like more than a tit for tat response as the US carried out strikes for a few hours earlier today and the Iranian response, missile and drone attacks across the region, is still ongoing as of this recording.
In turn we don’t have any solid battle damage assessments however the US says we went after a number of radar sites along the coast and Iran says that one strike hit a wedding party killing four and wounding more than 50.
On the other side, Iran appears to have shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone and it looks like at least a few missiles bypassed air defense and impacted in Jordan. Jordan has since announced that 10 missiles were intercepted and 3 fell in unpopulated areas.

So it looks like Ukraine just took out another Tu-95 bomber, on the runway, pretty far inside Russian territory. That would be the second Russian strategic bomber hit by a Ukrainian drone in the past six weeks. Same airfield actually which seems like maybe there’s a little gap in their air defense to say the least.

And meanwhile in Iran, US forces have just launched a new series of strikes along the coast as Iran has continued attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Jack Keane says the United States is applying unprecedented pressure on Iran — and that this strategy could represent a fundamental change in how Washington deals with the Iranian regime.

Speaking about Secretary Scott Bessent’s economic campaign, Keane argues that the objective is no longer simply to force Tehran back to the negotiating table. Instead, the administration appears determined to attack Iran’s ability to generate revenue, move money and sustain the regime itself.

Keane explains why he believes Iran could face extraordinary economic pressure, why another temporary agreement may not be enough, and why President Trump may be unwilling to simply pass the Iran problem to another administration.

The discussion also examines the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s attacks on commercial tankers, Russia’s support for Tehran and Vladimir Putin’s increasingly difficult position in Ukraine.
