A Russian drone directly struck the central SBU building in Kyiv, wounding nine people and hitting the area identified as the office of SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the drone deliberately targeted the SBU leadership and has ordered Poklad to prepare an “appropriate and significant response,” with Ukraine’s military supporting that response.

In this breaking update, I examine the location of the strike, the remarkable video that appeared on Russian social media, and the questions surrounding how the incoming drone was filmed before impact. We also look at Russian attempts to exploit the recent SBU–GUR tensions for propaganda and what this attack could mean as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner prepare for planned diplomacy involving Moscow and Kyiv.

This was an expected, but serious response from Iran

In response to Iran firing missiles at two US warships in the Middle East, the US military just destroyed three Iranian oil tankers. This is actually a pretty big escalation in a few ways. First off, the launching missiles at our aircraft carrier is significant and not something we’ve seen in a while but then the US response was serious, actually sinking commercial vessels in this key waterway.

That said, we’re still at a bit of an impasse where neither Iran nor the US seem willing to give an inch as the pressure mounts in different ways.

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner went to Moscow for more than three hours of talks with Vladimir Putin—and what happened inside the Kremlin raises serious questions about how the Trump administration’s envoys are approaching Russia and the war against Ukraine.

In this update, I break down Witkoff’s extraordinary opening remarks to Putin, including a translation nuance that quickly drew attention in Russian media. I also examine Yuri Ushakov’s account of the closed-door meeting and dinner, where Putin presented the Russian version of the battlefield, repeated Moscow’s demand to address the so-called “root causes” of the war, and pushed propaganda claims about Ukraine.

The talks also went beyond Ukraine. According to the Russian account, the two sides discussed potential large-scale Russian-American economic projects. Witkoff and Kushner then left Moscow for Kyiv, where they are expected to meet Ukrainian leaders and hear directly about the reality of Russia’s war.

The central question now is whether Ukraine can challenge the narrative these American envoys heard in Moscow—and whether their visit to Kyiv changes how they understand Putin’s demands and Russia’s conduct of the war.

The Ryazan Refinery has been hit and is burning heavily this morning as Ukraine knocked out Russia's 3rd largest refinery. This refinery accounts for a massive 5% of Russian fuel supplies, and it's ceasing of operations could cost the Russians dearly now that only 30% of their refinery capacity was operational before this attack. In the Middle East Iran has once again threatened major attacks and offensive action further against US forces in the region, claiming that the time of "reciprocal strikes" is over once again showing the war is far from over and may be escalating very soon. Europe continues preparing for the worst case scenario with Russia as they announce the threat of a wave of assassination attacks being attempted by Russia in Germany in the coming months. In the Middle East US forces are now beginning a withdrawal from Kurdistan in Northern Iraq which is expected to be complete by the end of this month, signaling an end to US presence in the area after the return of US forces in the Mid-2010's. Ukraine also destroyed at least 2 attack helicopters and damaged another at the Adler airport near Sochi, and have also targeted a munitions ship in the Mediterranean that was travelling off the coast of Algeria or Libya.

Overnight Ukraine struck two more oil refineries in Russia which might seem pretty normal at this point but according to a new assessment in the Wall Street Journal, the costs are really starting to add up.

We also just had Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visit Moscow and Kyiv in a new push for peace. From what we can tell, the talks seem to have gone well, and it’s notable these two visited Ukraine at all. However, there’s no indication there’s going to be any major changes anytime soon.

Looks like the Yemen Civil War is back to full scale fighting as the Houthis kicked off an offensive in the south and launched missiles into Saudi Arabia leading the Yemeni government to counterattack saying they plan to wipe out the Houthis once and for all.

Saudi Arabia has seen major explosions and fires at the Jazan oil port- one of the largest in the country- and other key sites after the Houthis conducted a ballistic missile strike overnight comprising dozens of missiles. Saudi Arabia has stated that 73 people were wounded as a result of the strike and are now vowing to take extreme offensive measures to crush the Houthi menace. Meanwhile the IRGC has shot down another US drone in the Strait of Hormuz this morning, and has claimed to have captured a Unmanned Submersible Vehicle as well. Meanwhile NATO has suffered another airspace violation at the hands of Russian drone forces, with a drone flying all the way through Moldova, into Romania for a significant time, and then back into Moldova where it then exploded. Romania also uncovered a plot to attempt an attack on a Romanian airfield by Russian Intelligence in a very similar form to the Leipzig attack conducted earlier this year in Germany. Germany also pledged more support for Ukraine's Patriot in the form of more Pac-2 missiles. Ukraine also targeted and hit the Russian Saratov refinery causing an explosion and fire.

Iran's revolutionary guard is claiming it fired ballistic missiles at a US  military base in Jordan and attacked 10 ships. The strikes coming after the US said it had destroyed five Iranian oil tankers as the war continues to escalate. Meanwhile the US says that the Iranian attacks were intercepted and no one was injured.
