Tanks are still useful on the modern battlefield. I know that’ll get some folks fired up but look, when you talk to the people actually fighting the war, they want more tanks. That should be a pretty good sign.
But also, we’re not seeing tanks scrapped, but rather technical and tactical adaptations emerge to keep them in the fight, at least for now.

After the Trump-Putin call and a full day of statements from Moscow, NATO, Germany, Ukraine, and the United States, the direction of this war is becoming harder to ignore: serious officials are now openly preparing for a conflict that could continue for months—and potentially years.

In this update, I break down Yuri Ushakov’s account of the Trump-Putin conversation, Dmitry Peskov’s insistence that Russia still intends to achieve the goals of its so-called “special military operation,” and Moscow’s apparent belief that winter pressure could weaken Ukraine. At the same time, Britain and Germany are moving additional air-defense support toward Ukraine as Russia intensifies attacks on critical infrastructure.

Germany’s Boris Pistorius warns that Russian air raids could increase as temperatures fall. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte calls on allies to dig deeper, while U.S. Undersecretary Elbridge Colby delivers one of the clearest statements of the day: the West must be prepared for a protracted conflict and for Ukraine’s requirements to continue for months and years ahead.
