It’s not the tech or the manufacturing, both items that we could tackle and scale tomorrow. It’s adaptation. Warfare right now is changing faster than any time in history.

What works today, may not work tomorrow. With how long it takes us to develop and deploy new technologies, it’s likely that what we roll out to our soldiers is best case no longer the ideal solution, worst case, it’s already outdated, bordering on useless.

Today, there are dangerous updates from the Russian Federation.

Here, Russia is facing an extraordinary plague outbreak in Siberia after a young laboratory worker died from a mysterious, severe pneumonia, and nearly two hundred potential contacts were placed under medical observation. Daria Shipilova, twenty-eight years old, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute and deteriorated rapidly after falling ill. The whole hospital was quarantined, public events were canceled, and Russia’s top public-health official Anna Popova traveled thousands of kilometers from Moscow to coordinate the response. Yet Russian authorities insist the regional situation remains stable, and that is where Russia’s story becomes increasingly strange.

According to the officially reported version, the lab official accidentally broke a test tube containing live plague bacteria while working. But Russian epidemiologist Mikhail Favorov publicly questioned that explanation, arguing that specialists handling dangerous pathogens work in protective equipment and describing infection through such an accident as unlikely. He also argued that the immediate arrival of the highest-ranking health officials in Russia indicates authorities were treating the situation extremely seriously, despite trying to project calmness to the public.

Russian authorities subsequently contradicted themselves and their own official laboratory-accident story, as they changed their version and stated that the woman died from pneumonia of unknown etiology, that testing found no microorganisms connected to her work, and that an investigation discovered no laboratory emergency involving dangerous pathogens.

Yet the precautions have been extensive, as nearly two hundred contacts were identified, several medical facilities introduced quarantine measures, preventive restrictions appeared elsewhere, and authorities launched an investigation. Meanwhile, officials initially avoided publicly identifying the suspected disease. One of the local leaders, Alexei Tsydenov, initially wrote that the woman had died from plague before subsequently modifying the statement to say she possibly had.

That combination has inevitably produced accusations of a cover-up, with the discrepancy obvious, as Moscow publicly minimizes the danger while simultaneously implementing measures appropriate for a potentially serious infectious incident.

The Kremlin has powerful reasons to prevent panic, as a genuine outbreak spreading beyond isolated contacts could force quarantines of whole towns, disrupt transportation and industrial production, consume medical resources, and create serious public anxiety at a time when Russian society is already on high alert as it feels the economic consequences of Putin’s campaign in Ukraine.

These consequences can become even more dangerous, as the Russian war machine depends upon enormous logistical networks moving soldiers, equipment, and ammunition across the country. A major infectious outbreak affecting transportation hubs, military facilities, or mobilization centers could interfere with troop rotations and training. Quarantines could remove personnel from duty, while outbreaks among tightly concentrated soldiers could temporarily disable entire formations, ending Putin’s war earlier than expected, as large-scale health restrictions would create another demand on government finances and manpower precisely when Moscow needs both elsewhere.

Overall, for the Russian government, controlling information may therefore become almost as important as controlling the medical situation. Russia has a long history of secrecy surrounding major disasters, from the nuclear power plant disaster in Chornobyl during the Soviet Union to the Kursk submarine sinking catastrophe, which Putin tried to hide at the beginning of his reign twenty-six years ago. Whether the event in Irkutsk ultimately proves to be a plague outbreak, another more common infection, or an isolated laboratory incident without major consequences, the conflicting explanations have already created precisely what the Kremlin would want to avoid: suspicion that the official story is concealing something considerably more serious. Something that could be the final nail in the coffin not only for Putin’s war against Ukraine but also for his regime.

I examine the reported Ukrainian drone strikes on two critical Russian oil-logistics targets: the NZNP Rostovsky oil-products export terminal in Rostov-on-Don and the Transneft-linked pumping and storage site near Prosvet in Samara. The Rostov terminal reportedly handles up to 3.5 million tons of petroleum products annually, while the Samara hub receives, stores, blends, and transports crude from major producing regions. I assess why these targets matter amid reports that Donald Trump sought to lift restrictions on Russian diesel exports and urged Ukraine to stop hitting oil facilities.

I also cover reported strikes on Russian drone infrastructure, command posts, electronic-warfare systems, depots, and a repair base; Ukraine’s 73% reported drone-neutralization rate against a Russian attack involving 160 UAVs; and the devastating guided-bomb attack on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia. Finally, I review battlefield indicators and reported Ukrainian gains east of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.

Today, the biggest news comes from the Russian Federation.

Here, separatists have emerged again to stage a coup and try to secede from Russia. However, what followed was a brutal crackdown and forced exile, showing that only oppression can hold the country together now.

Recently, Alexander Ivanov, a former parliamentarian from Yakutia, initially built his platform around claims that the Sakha people lacked political and cultural freedom, framing issues of language and identity as evidence of systemic inequality. He escalated this position by publicly entertaining the idea of Yakutia’s secession and amplifying his message through symbolic gestures, including recorded statements at the Independence Monument, which recast a regional discourse into a more overtly political challenge to the Russian state. His activities moved beyond domestic advocacy as he began cultivating international visibility, using foreign media outlets, particularly in Turkey, to project his narrative outward and aligning himself with circles linked to Pan Turkist ideology. This shift effectively transformed his position from a regional political stance into one with geopolitical implications, raising concerns about external influence and coordination. Moscow’s response followed this escalation as Ivanov was designated a foreign agent and stripped of his parliamentary mandate. By persistently promoting narratives of oppression and advocating separation, he directly undermined national unity.

The central authorities must suppress these separatist ideas before they spread to other regions and political spaces. Because of the developments in Yakutia, Russia must act now to prevent further disruptions in other problematic parts of the country. Notably, the risk is far greater than Ivanov's remarks because now these ideas can quickly proliferate, and other regional politicians and activists can join him and declare their desire for more autonomy or full independence. If other separatists see that Moscow cannot assert dominance, they will be inclined to act while the government is weak and occupied with waging a war in Ukraine.

These separatist tendencies are not limited to Yakutia but can be observed across several regions of Russia, taking different forms depending on local history and demographics, which makes it harder for Moscow to control. In the North Caucasus, separatism has historically taken the form of armed insurgency, as seen when the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria declared independence, leading to prolonged and violent conflict before federal control was reimposed. By contrast, in Dagestan, the issue is less about a single unified movement and more about fragmented proposals reflecting the republic’s ethnic complexity, which diffuses separatist sentiment. Proposals range from creating independent ethnic entities to forming a unified Dagestani state. Further north, in the Volga Federal District, movements are generally less militant and focus more on cultural autonomy and political rights among Turkic and Finno Ugric populations, indicating a more subtle approach compared to complete cessation or military action.

The drivers behind separatist sentiment across Russia’s regions include economic disparities, control over natural resources, and unequal burdens in military mobilization. Each region carries its own historical grievances and sources of tension with the central government. In many ethnic republics, where non Russian populations form majorities or significant minorities, separatist narratives are often rooted in nationalism, cultural preservation, and long-standing historical memory. Concerns about the disappearance of local languages and traditions intersect with perceptions that resource rich regions are economically exploited, with wealth extracted but insufficient reinvestment into local development or poverty reduction. Military mobilization has further intensified these grievances because it has been disproportionately affecting poorer, rural, and minority communities. As a result, certain ethnic groups, such as the Buryats and other indigenous peoples of Siberia, have appeared in casualty figures at rates exceeding their share of the overall population.
